Systems Genetics of Sleep Fellowship

Posted by: National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Posted date: 2013-Mar-07

Location: USA

The Laboratory of Systems Genetics was established under the Earl Stadtman Investigator program, designed to facilitate high-risk, high-impact research. The research of the group and its members is supported by the collaborative and interdisciplinary NIH intramural program and state-of-the-art high-performance computing, high-throughput sequencing, proteomics, bioinformatics, and other core facilities.

The laboratory uses systems genetics approaches to study genetic variation in sleep in natural populations of Drosophila. The lab is currently pursuing several projects designed to uncover the relationship between molecular polymorphisms, gene expression, and sleep phenotypes in order to understand the interaction of gene networks with environmental changes affecting sleep, and to identify gene networks for sleep that are conserved across species. These efforts require proficiency in both statistical and programming skills.

Interested candidates must have received a Ph.D. within the past five years in statistical or quantitative genetics, genome science, systems biology, or a related discipline and be highly motivated to participate in and design innovative research projects. An established ability to conduct or support research in systems genetics is required, along with a demonstrated proficiency in statistical programming language (i.e., C, R, or Matlab). The candidate will conduct both methodological and collaborative research in genome-wide association, genotype-by-environment, and genotype-by-genotype studies. The candidate will be supported with an excellent intramural NIH fellowship in a stimulating and interactive research environment at NIH.

Please email a cover letter indicating preferred start date and research area, CV, summary of research accomplishments, and names and contact information for at least three references to:
