The latest phase of technological development, the Internet-of-Things (IoT), is composed of everyday devices implemented with microprocessors and sensors (e.g., sound, movement, temperature) beyond the rectangular confines of PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones. The technology has been finding wide applicability and is expected to deliver great benefits to its users. The possibilities range from better healthcare as a result of health monitoring through wearables to less energy consumption as a result of smart thermostats. However, many of the possibilities that are emphasized in popular media are techno-utopian promises. The IoT combines device-device, device-person and person-person networked technologies. The devices and persons involved create a complex, omnipresent system in which IoT devices can go unnoticed and make autonomous decisions. So far, behavioral factors necessary to understand the impact of the IoT have been largely ignored, and we know little about the key driver for benefitting from the IoT: skills. To ensure more equal opportunities, the aim of this PhD project is to investigate inequalities in IoT skills among the general user population from a social-contextual perspective.
So far, it is unknown what social-contextual factors affect IoT skill levels. Although a variety of studies on information and communication technologies highlight the importance of one’s surroundings and informal social networks, the role played by other members of one’s social networks in facilitating the use of IoT skills is unknown. In the PhD-project, the IoT is considered as a dynamic component of the situated practice in which it is used. Society’s values, processes and the actors involved determine this use.
The work that has been done indicates that an individual’s digital skills are strongly shaped by his or her local social context, especially the home context. Children might learn to use the IoT from their parents or siblings. After children reach school age, home becomes an even more relevant locus for learning digital skills. Older people tend to turn to their partners, (grand)children or neighbors to help them learn digital skills. However, we do not know the extent to which such support is helpful. Studies that include the home context are scarce because of the difficulties of capturing the richness and complexity of experiences in the home setting.
This PhD project will start with a systematic literature review regarding social-contextual mechanisms that might play a role in the use of IoT skills at home. This review will provide input on specific mechanisms or relationships that will be monitored in a field experiment to closely monitor how the IoT is employed in 30 family settings over a period of 12 months.
Given the complexity and autonomy of the home-based IoT, studying this system requires a combination of disciplinary approaches that provides the means to facilitate such research. Three data-collection methods will be employed to conduct a detailed investigation of how IoT skills are applied and learned: IoT log data, diary study, and semi-structured interviews.

Conditions of employment
A four-year full-time Ph.D. position, starting November 1 (preferred), 2017. The gross salary is € 2222,- per month in the first year going up to € 2840,- in the fourth year. On top of this, you receive a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
