Dr. Claudia Kemper's laboratory, which is located in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology and the Immunology Center, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), is recruiting a computational postdoctoral researcher with expertise related to epigenomics, biostatistics, and systems biology approaches (capacity in RNA-seq analyses is a must). Our laboratory focuses on the new and non-canonical roles of intracellularly functioning innate immunity in the regulation of both innate and adaptive immune responses. For example, we have previously shown that intracellular complement as well as NLRP3 inflammasome activation is critical to the normal induction and contraction of Th1 responses via regulation of key nutrient influx and metabolic pathways in CD4+ T cells and that deviations in this ‘pathways' underlie autoimmune disease (Liszewski et al., Immunity, 2013; Kolev et al., Immunity, 2015; Arbore et al., Science, 2016).
To assess for abnormalities in these pathways in patients with autoimmune disease, infections or cancer, we use a range of array or ‘omic' techniques including gene arrays, CyTOF technology, ChIP-Seq, RNA-Seq, and ATAC-Seq.
The candidate should be able to analyze and mine all data generated in the laboratory or by collaborators and also cross-analyze such data with those available in public databases. Further, she/he will work closely with experimental biologists to integrate bioinformatics with wet lab approaches to elucidate normal cellular development and differentiation as well as the basis for disease states and pathological conditions in both animal models and humans. Opportunities for extensive collaborations with the research communities and a supportive environment with a roadmap into independence are in place.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Computer Science or Statistics with knowledge of R or Matlab; Python or Perl; and ideally C or C++, and have received a Ph.D. within the past five years. In addition, the ability to analyzed high throughput sequencing data is required. The candidate will be supported with an excellent intramural NIH fellowship in a stimulating and interactive research environment at NIH.
