Doctoral Grant (BOF), Evolutionary Genomics - 2018BAPDOCPROEX349Posted by: University of Antwerp
Posted date: 2018-Dec-13
The Faculty of Science is seeking to fill a full-time (100%) vacancy in the Department of Biology for a
Doctoral Grant by the University Research Fund (BOF) in the area of Evolutionary Genomics
The hundreds of closely related but ecologically diverse species of Lake Malawi cichlid fish provide an exceptional model to study the genomic mechanisms involved in rapid adaptation and diversification. In the Svardal lab we are interested in both the fundamental evolutionary processes involved in the formation of new species and the molecular basis of adaptive phenotypes.
In this project you will analyse the genomes of museum specimens to uncover the genetic basis of recent adaptation to heavy fishing pressure in Malawi cichlids. Furthermore, you will use computational and statistical genomic techniques to understand the origin and role of old genomic variation in rapid adaptation and evolutionary diversification.
