Postdoctoral IRTA Position

Posted by: National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Posted date: 2019-Jul-12

Location: USA

Position Description:

A postdoctoral intramural research training award (IRTA) position is available in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Laboratory of Bacteriology Gene Regulation Section, located at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) campus in Hamilton, Montana. This position will focus on the interactions of Borrelia burgdorferi and B. hermsii with their tick vectors and mammalian hosts. Projects are available to study the infective cycle, transcriptional regulation, signal transduction, and stress responses in B. burgdorferi and B. hermsii. We are particularly interested in how systems affect host/vector/pathogen interactions and the virulence of tickborne relapsing fever and Lyme disease spirochetes. Our laboratory maintains Ixodes scapularis and Ornithodoros hermsi tick colonies for our research, and the successful candidate will gain valuable experience working with these important arthropod vectors.

RML has undergone an expansion with new biosafety level (BSL)-4, BSL-3, and BSL-2 facilities. The lab has been completely renovated with new BSL-2/BSL-3 animal facilities and excellent support services. These include an NGS facility, proteomics core, histology core facility, bioinformatics core group, and a state-of-the-art electron microscopy facility. RML is located in the Bitterroot Valley of western Montana, with easy access to some of the best hiking, skiing, kayaking, mountain biking, and trout fishing in North America. Trainees will receive a stipend commensurate with their experience, and benefits include health insurance.

Visit Research Training at NIAID for more information about joining NIAID’s dynamic atmosphere!

Qualifications:

Successful applicants should be highly motivated and have a recent doctoral degree (obtained within last three years) in biochemistry, molecular biology, or microbiology. Applicants may be U.S. citizens or permanent residents; for a visiting fellowship, visa requirements apply.

To Apply:

Please send curriculum vitae (CV) and three letters of reference to Frank Gherardini, Ph.D., Rocky Mountain Laboratories, Laboratory of Bacteriology, NIAID, NIH, 903 S. 4th Street, Hamilton, MT 59840; E-mail: fgherardini(at)niaid.nih.gov.

HHS, NIH, and NIAID are equal opportunity employers committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
