The Faculty of Sciences is seeking to fill a full-time (100%) vacancy in the Department of Chemistry for a
Doctoral Grant by the University Research Fund (BOF) in the area of Molecular Spectroscopy
Specifically for the research project: “Exploring the three-dimensional structure of antimicrobial peptides through optical activity spectroscopy”
Job description
-
You prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of Molecular Spectroscopy. The research project will revolve around using a combination of state-of-the-art chiroptical spectroscopic techniques (Raman optical activity and vibrational and electronic circular dichroism), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and cutting edge computational chemistry to structurally study a range of antimicrobial peptides in solution, relating these findings to developing a novel class of antibiotics.
-
You publish scientific articles related to the research project of the assignment.
-
You contribute to teaching and research at the Department of Chemistry.
Profile and requirements
-
You hold a master degree in Chemistry or Physics.
-
Experience in chiroptical spectroscopy and DFT level calculations on biomolecules is strongly preferred.
-
Working knowledge of protein chemistry and NMR spectroscopy is advantageous.
-
You can submit outstanding academic results.
-
Students in the final year of their degree can also apply.
-
Foreign candidates are encouraged to apply.
-
Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.
