The Faculty of Arts is seeking to fill a full-time (100%) vacancy in the Department of Literature for a

Doctoral Grant by the University Research Fund (BOF) in the area of Literary Studies and Digital Humanities

ACDC (the Antwerp Centre for Digital humanities and literary Criticism) builds on a long tradition of literary research at the University of Antwerp while taking the field’s more recent developments into account by applying digital tools and methodologies to humanities research. ACDC hosts the Beckett Digital Manuscript Project, which was recently awarded the MLA Prize for a Bibliography, Archive, or Digital Project in 2019.

A team of PhDs and postdocs will collaborate in the creation, launch and curation of a digital scholarly edition of James Joyce’s library and unpublished letters. They will interrelate this material to Joyce’s biography and oeuvre. The PhD candidate will write a dissertation in the area of literary studies and DH.

Job description

  • You prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of literary studies and digital humanities.
  • You publish scientific articles related to the research project of the assignment.
  • You contribute to teaching and research in the Antwerp Centre for Digital humanities and literary Criticism and the Department of Literature.

Profile and requirements

  • You hold a master degree in Digital Humanities or English Literature.
  • You can submit outstanding academic results.
  • Students in the final year of their degree can also apply.
  • Foreign candidates are encouraged to apply.
  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.
  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.
  • You are experienced with the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) and XML data processing.
  • You are proficient in at least one major programming language (for example: Python, Java, PHP).
  • Language skills: You are proficient in English at level C1 or higher. Ability to read in French, Italian or German is desirable.

We offer

  • a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years, with the possibility of renewal for a further two-year period after positive evaluation;
  • the start date of the scholarship will be between October 1st 2019 and October 1st2020;
  • a gross monthly grant ranging from € 2.373,36 to € 2.516,73;
  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.
