A postdoctoral training position is currently available in the Cancer Genetics and Comparative Genomics Branch (CGCGB) of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). The position is located in the laboratory of Jim Mullikin, Ph.D., whose current research program capitalizes on the use of comparative genomics to answer important questions in human disease research. The laboratory participates in a wide variety of collaborative projects, performing genomic variation analysis, genome assembly, disease mutation discovery, RNA sequence analysis, and computer algorithm development using sequence data from the latest available technologies. The Mullikin Lab is co-located with the NIH Intramural Sequencing Center (NISC), so the successful applicant will have the opportunity to access data from the newest sequencing methods in a rapidly changing field. In addition, the laboratory has access to state-of-the-art, high-performance computing systems.
The Intramural Research Program is on the Bethesda campus and offers a wide array of training opportunities for scientists early in their careers. The funding for this position is stable and offers the trainee wide latitude in the design and pursuit of his or her research project. The successful candidate will have access to NHGRI’s established and robust bioinformatics infrastructure, as well as resources made available through NIH’s Center for Information Technology (CIT), the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and NISC.

Candidates should have or be close to obtaining a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, statistics, or a closely related field. Candidates with a keen interest in computer algorithm development, neural networks and deep learning, whole genome assembly and other specialized next generation sequence analysis methods are particularly encouraged to apply. This position requires a high level of proficiency in programming skills, and experience applying computational methods to genomic sequence data is highly desirable. Applicants must possess good communication skills and be fluent in both spoken and written English. Strong skills in the use of new computer software, critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and the ability to work semi-independently are also required.To Apply:
