Are you passionate about high-end technological design? Do you want to continue developing your skills with a combination of education and work? The Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) programme Energy & Process Technology (EPT) offers you a 2-year position combining post-MSc education and a (web based) software design project at Mercury Lab BV (www.mercurylab.org).
The educational programme, carried out at the University of Twente (UT), will have an in-depth and broadening character with ample attention for professional development. This course programme is tailored to the web design project. In collaboration with MercuryLab you will work on high level, creative new designs for complex issues.
The project - A web interface for high-performance cloud-computing software
The project aim is to develop a web interface for MercuryDPM (mercurydpm.org), an open-source software primarily developed at the UT and commercialised via MercuryLab. MercuryDPM is a high-performance tool to simulate and optimise industrial bulk processes, such as mixers, silos, conveyors, or 3D printers. The software can be employed on powerful cloud-computing platforms, allowing customers to access the software without buying expensive hardware i.e. via a software as a service business model.
We are looking for a PDEng trainee to design a new web interface (app) for this software. The software should allow industrial users to run, visualise, and analyse simulations, and thus to test and optimise their machinery in a virtual environment instead of using costly and time-consuming physical prototypes.
You will learn how to develop virtual prototypes (computational models) of large-scale processes, including how to calibrate material models, transfer physical designs into a virtual environment (geometry, in- and outflow, material and surface characteristics, control), and how to analyse simulation data and compare it with macroscopic measurements. You will become familiar with optimising machinery design (setup parameterisation, design of experiments and optimisation techniques). On the programming side, you will learn how to develop a user-friendly and easily extendable interface for complex scientific applications. We will provide you with a robust scientific training and exposure to both academic and business environments. This will equip you with the multidisciplinary and transferable skills needed to develop high-level, creative software for designing and optimising complex industrial processes.
We are looking for a candidate either with a background in mechanical/process engineering and an interest in web programming, or with a background in web programming and an interest in mechanical/process engineering.
• You hold a MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics/Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related discipline;
• You have demonstrated affinity with design and multidisciplinary assignments;
• You have a passion for finding solutions for complex technological issues;
• You have excellent collaboration and communication skills;
• You are self-motivating, willing to take initiatives and feel the responsibility for your own project
Candidates with a non-Dutch qualification and who have not had secondary and tertiary education in English need to provide a minimum IELTS-test score of 6.5, internet TOEFL test (TOEFL-iBT) showing a score of at least 90, or a Cambridge CAE-C (CPE).
