Doctoral scholarship holder in the area of of the Expressive Power of Neural Networks
Research Environment: The PhD student will perform research in the ADREM Data Lab, under the supervision of professor Floris Geerts. The Adrem Data Lab consists of 4 faculty members, 7 postdoctoral researchers and 21 doctoral students. The lab builds on a long standing and internationally strong reputation ranging from the theoretical foundations to the practical application of data sciences. The nexus between theory and applications positions the lab in a unique way. From its embedding in the department of Mathematics and Computer Science, the lab covers many important facets required to manage, query, interpret and analyze data, in all its forms. This results in a broad and recognized excellence in areas ranging from data management, data cleaning, data mining, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The project: Neural networks and graph neural networks have proved effective at a wide range of empirical tasks. Despite these successes, understanding of how and why such learning architectures achieve their empirical successes is still largely lacking. Despite the large body of existing work, it is still challenging to derive conclusions that provide both theoretical generality with respect to choices of architecture as well as meaningful insights into practical performance. The goal of this project is to better understand why and how (graph) neural networks are successful, from a theoretical and practical point of view. Moreover, since linear algebra underlies state-of-the-art network architecture, a sub-goal of the project is also to understand the impact of linear algebra operators in the overall architecture.
