The PMSMatTrain project is funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 Programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Initial Training Network for Early Stage Researchers (ESR) (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2018, Grant Agreement No. 813263). The ESR-9 position will be available from on January 2020 on a temporary basis for a maximum period of 3 years (renewable 1 year full-time employment contract upon positive evaluation).
The PMSMatTrain project focuses on gaining a comprehensive understanding of the progressive phase of multiple sclerosis (MS) from basics to translation, fully supported by eight beneficiaries (six research institutions and two SMEs). This multidisciplinary network will educate and train 15 Early Stage Researchers in device design, biomaterials, materials science, stem cell biology, in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo models of multiple sclerosis, molecular biology, in silico modelling of CSF flow, material functionalisation strategies and device validation.
Programme fellows will experience both public and private sector research & development training and will be best placed to secure employment as high calibre, innovative and well-trained graduates.
Core activities of the Bio-Imaging Lab:
The core R&D activity of the Bio-Imaging lab (https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/rg/bio-imaging-lab/) is experimental high resolution neuroMRI focusing on neurodegeneration, neuromodulation and neuroplasticity. The research is performed on rat and mouse models for different human neuropathologies and on songbirds as a model for neuroplasticity and learning. We have two 7Tesla 16 cm and one 9.4Tesla 20 cm horizontal bore in-vivo MRI scanners and a cryocoil from Bruker (Germany) and a desktop 4.7Tesla from MRSolutions (UK)). Our group has access to micro PET/SPECT/CT and BLI and advanced image processing through other UA research teams with whom we are clustered into a large UA imaging consortium EGAMI (Expert Group Antwerp Molecular Imaging https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/rg/bio-imaging-lab/collaborations/egami-imaging-consortium/).
You will develop and validate neuro-MRI tools that enable to follow up inflammation, demyelination and remyelination in animal models for MS. These tools will be applied to test the therapeutic efficacy of a novel device housing a multi-modal hydrogel, to modulate inflammation, re-myelination and neuroprotection. Data will be acquired on 7T and 9,4 T Bruker scanners. The project is multidisciplinary and masters a wide range of techniques including acquiring data of dedicated animal models, and image analysis. At the University of Antwerp you will highly interact with ESR-10 who will be responsible for the molecular and cellular characterisation of inflammation, re-myelination and neuroprotection in animal models of MS, as well as upon therapeutic intervention. Internationally, you will directly interact with two or more ESRs from different participating organisations during one or more secondments abroad.

Salary: The remuneration will be in line with the European Commission rules for Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant holders (Early-Stage Researchers, Initial Training Network).
