Postdoctoral researcher, Environmental microbiology and protein biochemistry - 2020BAPFWETEF069Posted by: University of Antwerp
Posted date: 2020-Feb-06
Supported by the Government of Flanders through the resources of the Special Research Fund (BOF), the University of Antwerp is seeking applications for a
Postdoctoral fellow, domain environmental microbiology and protein biochemistry (2 years)
The project requires a combination of approaches including molecular biology, protein biochemistry, and cell culturing. The selected candidate will join a productive and collaborative research group at UAntwerpen, coordinated by Prof. Filip Meysman, who is spearheading the international research on microbial electricity, and coordinates the Center of Excellence on Microbial Systems Technology. Combining state-of-the-art methods in molecular biology, microscopy, electrochemistry and physics, we are studying the mechanism of long-distance electron transport by cable bacteria.
See www.microbial-electricity.eu for more information about our research.
Within our international research team there is an opening for a PostDoctoral fellow (2 years) studying the conductive structures in cable bacteria. Recently, we have shown that cable bacteria contain a conductive fiber network that operates in comparable way to the copper wiring that we use to transport electricity. The highly conductive fibers enable a completely new interface between biology and electronics, providing a prospect for new materials and technology. The goal is to characterize these conductive biomolecules through proteomics in order to achieve a deeper understanding of this new form of biological electron transport. The project runs in collaboration with Prof. Karolien De Wael (AXES, UAntwerpen) and the VIB-VUB Center for Structural Biology (Prof. H. Remaut).
Profile and qualifications
We are looking for a flexible and creative person, who is highly motivated to tackle new and complex biological questions. You will have the opportunity to develop further your own skills and expertise within a vibrant research environment with a large international network.
How to apply?
The University of Antwerp is a family friendly organization, with a focus on equal opportunities and diversity. Our HR-policy for researchers was awarded by the European Commission with the quality label HR Excellence in research.
We support the Science4Refugees initiative and encourage asylum-seeking, refugee scientists and researchers to apply for a job at the University of Antwerp.
