The Advanced Visualization Branch (AVB), National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), has an opening for a postdoctoral training position. The position is in the newly established laboratory of Patti Brennan, RN, PhD, whose research program develops virtual reality (VR) experiences with the mission to improve the post-acute patient experience and aid in patient self-care activities. Additionally, the AVB engages in collaborative research projects that support the NINR mission of the scientific study of cross-condition symptomatology. The laboratory’s primary focus involves developing and evaluating VR experiences to examine the impact these tools have on health behavior.
The AVB is a cross-disciplinary team comprised of staff with expertise in nursing research, informatics, neuropsychology and digital engineering. The team creates virtual environments to observe, quantify, and assess objective indicators of behavior (e.g. performance and physiological) and subjective perceptions (e.g. mood, user experience, self-rated symptoms) in controlled, complex environments to evaluate individual differences in symptom expression, the delivery of impactful healthcare education, and the utility of VR to engage patients and improve health-related behaviors. Current AVB research focuses on environments to study the impact of fatigue on everyday activities, to evaluate interventions targeting dietary choices for individuals with chronic medical conditions, and to train patients in the use of pill boxes in a home-environment setting. Acceptable topics of study include human perception/cognition, construction of VR experiences/environments, evaluation of co-morbid symptoms in medical conditions and self-management of clinical conditions aided by VR exposure. The funding for this position is stable and a two-year commitment is requested.

Candidates should have or be close to obtaining a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in cognitive neuroscience, experimental psychology, neuropsychology, nursing, information systems, computer science, or a closely related field. Candidates interested in cognitive, emotional, and behavior aspects of virtual environments and/or patient education are particularly encouraged to apply. Competitive applicants will have publications related to area of interest and research expertise. Essential skills include understanding of research processes, knowledge and application of user interface/user experience research, understanding of data elements/structures for research, ability to work in a team environment.To Apply:
