The Center for Medical Genetics Antwerp (CMG) and the Nose and Throat and Ear Diseases Department (NKO) are both diagnostic and research departments within the University of Antwerp and the University Hospital Antwerp. Both departments are very active in the field of scientific research and employ dozens of researchers. The CMG and the NKO department have an ongoing clinical and scientific collaboration on hereditary hearing impairment. In this context, there is currently a vacancy for a:
You conduct scientific research into hereditary hearing impairment. Both clinical aspects and molecular genetic aspects are present in the research.
You prepare a doctoral thesis in this field.
You enroll as a doctoral student at the University of Antwerp doctoral school.
You have a master's degree in one of the life sciences (biomedical sciences, biochemistry, bio-engineer,…), or you will obtain this diploma in July 2020 at the latest.
You are willing to apply for external funding for your doctoral project from FWO and other channels (eg BOF UAntwerp), and you are eligible for this. This requires that you have a master's degree from a European university, and that you obtained your master's degree no more than 3 years ago (see FWO website for details about the conditions).
You are quality-oriented, honest, creative and collaborative.
You have good communication skills.
You have a strong interest in scientific research, laboratory work, and genetic data analysis.
You have a good knowledge of contemporary genetic techniques, and a good basic knowledge of human genetics.
You have a good knowledge of the physiology of the human body, in particular with regard to the function of the inner ear.
You have a basic knowledge of statistics and data analysis, and you are prepared to take additional training in this area.
You speak and write English fluently.
An appointment as a doctoral student for a period of one year, renewable to a total of 4 years after positive evaluation.
Start between August and October 2020.
Remuneration according to the standard scales of doctoral students in Flanders. (gross amount between € 2.447,20 and € 2.596,27)
